Login Options under Ubuntu Netbook Remix “karmic koala”

The Ubuntu Netbook Remix "karmic koala" 9.10 comes with variety of options regarding "Login" that you can choice. In the installation process, there are options to select whether to Login Automatically or Who Will Login with username and password.

Option 1: (In the installation process)
Select "Login Automatically", the computer will starts up without asking the username and password. It will automatically display your desktop.

Option 2: (In the installation process)
Select "Login with username and password", the computer will starts up asking the username and password before the desktop will display.

Now, if you select options 1 or 2 during the installation process and realize that you need to change the configuration. You can do the following steps listed below:

  • Click Application menu - System - Login Screen Settings, the configuration Login Screening Settings dialog box will appear. Select the Unlock button and supply your password to edit the configuration. The figure below showing the different ways to login using Ubuntu Netbook Remix.

  • The figure 1 shown that the login screen is configured to "show the screen for choosing who will login". In this option you need to provide username and password every time your computer starts up.
  • The second option "Log in as User Automatically" shown in figure 1. This option will tell the computer to login automaically without asking the username and password.

There is another way to open "Login Screen Settings" dialog box using a command in a console. To do so,  click the Application Menu - Accessories - Terminal and type the command:

$ gdmsetup

then, the "Login Screen Settings" dialog box will appear as shown in Figure 1.
